Description | |
"I'm gonna give ya a Kainin." |
Soul Harvester is one of the 50 original cars from Carmageddon: TDR 2000. It first appears in Race 2 of the Docks, and only re-appers later on in the Military Zone.
Design
It is a vaguely cane harvester looking machine with two oversized rotating crop dividers.
Performance
Despite what it may seem, Soul Harvester's biggest strength is its top speed, being able to reach 214mph when fully upgraded. It drives similarly to the Harvester from Carmageddon II, being a Front Wheel Drive vehicle with Rear Wheel Steering. It will be harder to go for pedestrians with this vehicle, but unlike the C2 Harvester, it can go up hills or inclines. Its offensive capabilities are average[1].
Driver
The driver, named "Samson Kaine" in the files, is fulled modeled. He has a black jacket with an orange vest underneath, and a red handkerchief around his neck. He also wears brown pants and black shoes.
Mission Appearances
Soul Harvester appears in the first mission from the Military Zone (Let's Go to Work), acting as a bodyguard for King Merc alongside Tow Meister. It does not need to be wasted, but will keep chasing the player.
Trivia
- Soul Harvester's file name is "Cainnie". Most of the files within are named "cain_harvister" or "cain_harvistor".
- Although Soul Harvester is cane harvester, it lacks any kind of visible feeding conveyor and crop processors.
- Body of vehicle resembles more of rough terrain forklift than cane harvester. That combined to lack of crop tank might suggest that it is forklift with added crop divider.
- Even though main texture has higher resolution version of tire tread, both tires use lower resolution version from additional texture.
- This vehicle has the name "The Harvester" hidden behind its cabin. It can be noticed a lot more clearly by looking at its texture. It may be a possible nod to the C2 Harvester, as it was a winner in a favorite cars poll put out by SCi mid-1999, the end goal of it was to add the five winners from Carmageddon and Carmageddon II to TDR 2000, even though those from the C2 side did not make it into the game in the end. It is possible development of The Harvester was started, but canned and textures were reused for Soul Harvester.
- Early on in development as seen in a work in progress shot in the gallery below, Soul Harvester's cabin wasn't covered by glass all around, and instead only had a small rectangular window on the front of it. "The Harvester" text used to be placed on the sides.
- Many iterations it went through during development shows. It's texture map has loads of mistakes and anomalities.
- Samson and Cain are both biblical figures. Samson is famed for his astonishing strength. Cain, meanwhile, was a crop farmer (i.e., a harvester) who killed his brother Abel, commiting the first murder.
- "Caning" can refer to the ingestion of cocaine, and the early driver name "Malcon Cainn" from the trivia below seems to confirm this was the intention behind it.
- A similar pun was used for Mike O'Kane, driver of Killer Coop from Splat Pack.
- Inside the files for Soul Harvester there is an info .txt file for an earlier iteration of the vehicle:
- NAME "Mr Cainn"
- DESCRIPTION "Top Speed: 90mph
- Kerb weight: 1.9 tons
