"Nitrous fumes burning my brain!"

SXE Black Hatch is one of the 50 original cars from Carmageddon: TDR 2000. It first appears in a mission from the Docks, but on Race 3 of the same zone, it begins to show up as a normal opponent, being part of the third batch of vehicles the player encounters in the game.

Design

The Black Hatch is a clear reference to the black Interceptor from Mad Max, based on a modified Ford Falcon Coupe. The homage is most obvious when one looks at the supercharger air intake on the bonnet and the shape of the headlights.

Performance

SXE Black Hatch is a solid all-rounder and a good choice for the mid-stage of the game. It has decent acceleration and offensive capabilities and good enough speed (267mph when fully upgraded) to complete missions and reach checkpoints[1].

Driver

The driver, named "Maxx Razor" in the files, is a modified Max Damage, having brown hair instead of being bald. His name and appearance are parody of Max Rockatansky, titular character of Mad Max-series.

Mission Appearances

SXE Black Hatch first appears in the Docks' second mission (Clear the Decks) alongside Witch Doctor. It will be driving around the area, but it is easily avoidable and does not need to be destroyed.

It is also featured in the Bridge's mission (The Great Divide), together with Femme Fatal, McKilem, and Witch Doctor. It is encountered as soon as the player leaves the tunnel. It will try to chase the player's car throughout the ground area, but just like in the earlier mission, it is easily avoidable and does not need to be destroyed.

Trivia

  • SXE Black Hatch's file name is "Interceptor". This was also its earlier name as seen in old screenshots.
  • The "SXE" part of the name may be intended to be read as "sexy", the full name being "Sexy Black Hatch".
  • 'SXE' is also a real term, denominating someone from a subculture of hardcore punk who is "straight edge", not taking substances like drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. This term contradicts the unused description, which suggests the driver is not straight edge. Whether this was an intended reference or not is unknown, however.
  • Mark Day was one of the artists who worked on SXE Black Hatch[2].
  • Main texture is based of photograph taken from set of Mad Max.
  • SXE is amalgamation of two iterations of Interceptor. Clean paintjob, side stacks, "Concorde"-style nose cone and air dam are from Mad Max. Fuel Tanks are from Mad Max 2. This matches real life restoration of Interceptor used in both movies.
  • Inside the files for SXE Black Hatch there is an info .txt file for an earlier iteration of the vehicle, although it uses a lot of elements from the Eagle MK4:
    • NAME "SXE Black Hatch"
    • DESCRIPTION "Top Speed: 200mph
    • Kerb weight: 1.5 tons
    • 0-60mph: 3.4 seconds
    • The Eagle's back and it rocks!"
    • DESCRIPTOR "Interceptordescriptor.txt"
    • DRIVER_NAME "Max Damage"
    • DRIVER_SHORT_NAME "Max"
    • STRENGTH 5
    • COST 50 // in thousands!
    • TYPE 0 // 0 = eagle, 1 = normal, 2 = novelty
    • //ARMOUR_MAP "eagle_armoured"

Interceptor is one of the 20 vehicles in the cancelled Game Boy Color port of Carmageddon: TDR 2000. It appears as a normal opponent on Race 2 of Hollowood, and Races 1 and 2 of High Rise.

Design

The sprite is based on the original model and there are no noticeable differences.

Performance

Interceptor has great top speed and handling, but its wasting potential is not very good.

Trivia

  • The car's reference is even more in your face in this version thanks to its name. This is because it never got updated to SXE Black Hatch, having a placeholder name like most vehicles from the Game Boy Color port.
  • Interceptor's menu art appears to have been traced from the screenshot seen in the May 2000 issue of the Micromania Tercera Epoca magazine.
